Best Time to Visit Koh Lipe — Seasons, Weather & Month-by-Month Guide
Timing your visit to Koh Lipe can make the difference between sun-drenched perfection and soggy disappointment. Like all of Thailand’s Andaman coast, Koh Lipe has a pronounced wet season when ferries are reduced and some accommodation closes entirely. The good news is that the dry season is long, reliable, and genuinely spectacular — and even the shoulder months can offer great value for those willing to accept the occasional shower.
Koh Lipe’s Two Seasons
- Dry Season (High Season): November to April — the best time to visit
- Wet Season (Low Season): May to October — ferries reduced or suspended, rough seas, heavy rainfall
Dry Season — November to April (Best Time to Visit)
Why This Is the Best Time to Visit
The northeast monsoon brings dry, sunny weather to the Andaman coast from November through April. During these months, Koh Lipe offers near-perfect tropical weather conditions:
- Sea conditions: Calm, clear water ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and diving
- Visibility: Underwater visibility can reach 20–30 metres at peak season
- Rainfall: Very low — typically a few brief showers per month
- Temperatures: Air temperature 28–34°C; sea temperature 28–30°C
- Ferries: Full schedules operating from Pak Bara, Langkawi, and Phuket
- Accommodation: Full choice of resorts and guesthouses open
Month-by-Month Dry Season Breakdown
November — The season opens. Weather improves rapidly through the month. Early November can still bring occasional rain. Late November is excellent. Good value.
December — Peak season begins. Clear skies, flat seas, exceptional visibility. The most popular month — book ferries and accommodation well in advance. Christmas and New Year sees the island at maximum capacity.
January — Considered by many to be the best month on Koh Lipe. Reliably sunny, calm seas, great visibility. Ideal for diving and snorkelling.
February — Excellent conditions continue. Seas calm, weather settled. Increasingly popular with European visitors. Book ahead.
March — Still good weather with reliable sunshine. Slightly hotter. Seas remain calm. A good month that feels less crowded than January–February.
April — Late dry season. Can feel very hot (33–36°C). Still excellent beach and snorkelling conditions for most of the month. Thai New Year (Songkran) falls in mid-April.
Shoulder Months — May and October
May — The Transition Month
- Ferry services: Operating but beginning to reduce by late May
- Accommodation: Many places begin closing from mid-May
- Crowd levels: Very low — the island quiets rapidly
- Weather: Unpredictable — good days interspersed with heavy rain
- Value: Very low prices if you catch a good weather window
October — Pre-Season
- Ferry services: Limited, resuming gradually from late October
- Accommodation: Limited but growing toward the end of the month
- Value: Excellent — pre-season prices before peak season rates kick in
Wet Season — June to September (Low Season)
The southwest monsoon brings heavy, sustained rainfall and strong winds to the Andaman coast from approximately late May to early November. Koh Lipe is deeply affected:
- Ferry services: Mostly suspended due to rough sea conditions
- Accommodation: Majority of resorts and guesthouses closed
- Beaches: Rough surf, debris on beaches
- Snorkelling/diving: Poor visibility, dangerous conditions
The island is effectively closed to tourism from June through September. It is not recommended to visit during these months.
